The film premiered in the Dramatic Competition at Sundance, internationally in The Edinburgh Film Festival and New Directors/New Films presented by The Museum of Modern Art/NY. Amy Taubin (Village Voice/Film Comment) named it a “radical debut” and "One of the Most Original American Indies of the year.”
LIFT (Feature 2001). Kerry Washington (Scandal, Ray, Django Unchained ) stars in her first lead role as a career shoplifter who uses materialism to get close to her Mother, played by Lonette McKee (Jungle Fever, Sparkle, The Cotton Club). The feature premiered in Dramatic Competition at Sundance, won Best Feature at the UrbanWorld Film Festival, was the recipient of the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award, the first Maryland Filmmakers Fellowship and was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards. It was the only film selected to screen in the Freestyle exhibit Organized by the Studio Museum in Harlem, at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. LIFT was picked up by Showtime, still runs on B.E.T. was recently carried on Amazon Prime.
